Description | Center-left to socialist party, begun as the Swiss Socialist Party founded in 1870 by members of the Rütli Society, a political party formed in 1838 by the German Workers' Association. The new party followed along a Marxist trajectory, becoming a weigh-point and sponsor in neutral Switzerland for Marxist revolutionaries, and famous as a refuge for Lenin between 1914 and 1917 and other Russian revolutionaries. Party's effort to facilitate a separate peace between Germany and revolutionary Russia exposed an alleged attempt by Lenin appointee Radeck to lead a communist revolution in Switzerland through the Swiss party on November 10, 1918, arousing general consternation in the country. The last straw came in 1939 when the party under Léon Nicole celebrated the German-Soviet Pact, forcing his dismissal and a revamping of its orientation. The SP became effectively the nation's ruling party for a decade after 1943 and continues to be one the nation's four dominant parties. The SP holds 39 seats in the National Council and is co-led by MPs Cedric Wermuth and Mattea Meyer [Sozialdemokratische Partei der Schweiz (SP); Parti socialiste suisse (PS); Partito socialista svizzero (PS)]. |
