Description | Center-right party founded by former leaders of the People's Front of Azerbaijan (dissolved in 1995) which was at the forefront of the "Maidan" or the Azerbaijan National Liberation Movement (1988–1991) which ejected Soviet forces from Azerbaijan and brought about the nation's independence on August 30, 1991. AMİP was the first party officially established in the new Republic of Azerbaijan. Personality clashes between AMIP's new leader Etibar Mammadov (elected on July 4, 1992) and other veterans of the People's Front of Azerbaijan brought about internal division, failure at the ballot box, and mass departures. Mammadov's resignation in February 2004 did not contrive to help matters and the party continued its slide until extraordinary parliamentary elections were held on September 1, 2024 which resulted in AMİP winning one seat in the parliament, representation it hadn't held for 23 years. Party has been led by the former chief of Azerbaijan's Central Election Commission, Arzukhan Alizadeh, since August 16, 2020 [Azərbaycan Milli İstiqlal Partiyası (AMİP)]. |
