Description | Remake of the oft-banned Workers' Party of Turkey launched in 1961 and merged with the Communist Party of Turkey in 1987. New iteration was granted recognition by Turkey's Constitutional Court in 2018. Party began as the People's Communist Party of Turkey (HTPK) in 2014 (dissolved on November 7, 2017) led by Umut Kuruç. The HTPK's lack of traction compelled its leadership to take a chance and seize the still-banned Workers' Party of Turkey name as its own three year's later. Party gained four seats since general elections held on June 24, 2018 and will participate in the 2023 legislative elections via the Labour and Freedom Alliance launched on August 25, 2022, a coalition of five far-left parties. Party is chaired by Erkan Baş [Türkiye İşçi Partisi (TİP); not to be confused with the Workers' Party dissolved on February 15, 2015]. |
