Description | Center-left alliance also known as the Coalition (Samfylking). The Samfylking became the second largest party in Iceland in terms of voter turnout and registered party members, and was initially formed to act as a counterweight to the long-time dominant Independence Party. The Samfylking was formed by merger of the People's Alliance (Alþýðubandalagið), the People's Party (Alþýðuflokkurinn), the Women's List (Kvennalistinn), and the National Guard (Þjóðvaki). Each of the four constituent parties dissolved themselves on May 5, 2000 to effect the merger. The Samfylking has formed three governments and led two of them. In addition, three mayors of Reykjavík have come from the ranks of the Samfylking, and it was for a long time the largest party in Hafnarfjörður and the largest party in the Reykjavík city council until 2018. Its chairman since October 28, 2022 is Kristrún Frostadóttir [Samfylkingin; Samfylkingin - jafnaðarflokkur Íslands, translates as The Coalition - the Equality Party of Iceland (SF or electoral symbol 'S')]. |
