Description | Center-right, liberal Flemish party launched as the bi-lingual "Party for Freedom and Progress" (Partij voor Vrijheid en Vooruitgang, PVV) by Guy Verhofstadt, a future Prime Minister of Belgium (July 12, 1999 – March 20, 2008). The PVV was itself a successor to the Liberal Party established in 1846, which would confirm the presently named Open VLD as the oldest party in Belgium. After Belgium was reconstituted in 1993 as a federal state composed of Communities and Regions, the PVV situated itself as Flemish-speaking, while a sister French-speaking party was established in Wallonia called the Reformist Movement (MR). Ahead of general elections planned for June 10, 2007, the PVV decided in February 2007 to change its name to Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open VLD). Party suffered losses in the Belgian Chamber that year nonetheless and has seen its seat position dwindle ever since. Party has been chaired by attorney and MP Egbert Lachaert since May 22, 2020 [Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democraten (Open VLD or OVLD); Libéraux et démocrates flamands ouverts]. |
