Description | Norway's oldest party and the nation's only 'social liberal'. Party was founded by Norway's first Prime Minister Johan Sverdrup (June 26, 1884 – July 13, 1889) and sponsored a number of social reforms, including transforming Norway into a 'welfare state' (in a period referred to as the 'Left State' in Norway). The Liberal Party held sway during Norway's early democratic years, holding six different prime-ministerships until 1935. Since then, the party has been much diminished, participating in government only in coalition with other parties. Education Minister Guri Melby has been party leader since September 26, 2020 and a candidate for Prime Minister in 2021 [Venstre (V)]. |
