Description | Islamist party formed out of the United Malays National Organization in 1951 by Muslim clerics eager to form a discrete pan-Islamic association that would evangelize the Peninsula. Association at first declared itself 'Socialist Islamic', steered by anti-colonialist Burhanuddin al-Helmy, falling in with the growing trend of newly-established Socialist parties developing world-wide at the time in the Third World. Meeting marginalization and obscurity as a consequence, the party turned sharply right and Muslim-Malay nationalist in 1971, changing its name to the Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party). Party currently holds 18 of the 222 seats in the Dewan Rakyat, found a base in West Malaysia (also known as the Malaysian Peninsula or 'Malaya'), and has become a major component party of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. Party's spiritual leader since October 10, 2016 has been a former Perlis State MP for Sanglang, Hashim bin Jasin [Parti Islam Se-Malaysia;ڤرتي اسلام سمليسيا (PAS)]. |
