Description | Classically liberal political party in Germany, founded in 1948 by members of pre-Second World War liberal parties. Held the balance of power for most of the late-20th Century, forming governments with both the CDU/CSU and the SPD. Failed to win any seats in the 2013 election for the first time in its history, but regained representation in 2017.
Party's policies support free markets and privatization, with less government interference in individual affairs. FDP's base of support comes mainly from professionals and self-employed Germans.
