Description | Oldest and most significant party in Romania. Party was linked to the most important events in the modern history of the country, from leading the nation to independence in 1877 to devising and adopting the Constitution of 1923. Party dominated Romania's political life from its birth in 1875 until it was banned, its leaders and members executed or jailed, under the Communist dictatorship established on November 1947. Party was revived on January 15, 1990 after the downfall of Nicolae Ceaușescu [Socialist Republic of Romania (1965–1989)]. Party may have been the first in Europe to identify itself squarely with the term 'liberalism' which it defines as believing in the primacy of the individual before society and equality before the law, and continues to maintain the same philosophy. Party has been chaired by the 68th Prime Minister (November 4, 2019 - December 7, 2020) and current President of the Chamber of Deputies (since December 21, 2020) Ludovic Orban since June 17, 2017 [Partidul Național Liberal (PNL)]. |
