Description | Conservative populist party which emerged at first as an armed resistance movement in reaction to the one-party autocracy established by FRELIMO on June 1975 based on Marxist-Leninist principles, with Samora Machel as president. The armed movement called itself the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) and fought for seven years against the Machel regime in what is known as the Mozambican Civil War. After a peace agreement was signed on October 4, 1992, RENAMO became a political party and abandoned its anti-communist ideology, adopting a populist and conservative ideology instead. Party become the nation's second-largest under the leadership of former guerilla leader Afonso Dhlakama, who was replaced by Ossufo Momade. after Dhlakama's death on May 3, 2018 [Resistência Nacional Moçambicana (RENAMO)]. |
