Description | Bush Congratulates New Spanish Leader
The Honolulu Advertiser
President Bush placed a congratulatory call Monday to Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, Spain's prime minister-elect, expressing hope the two countries can cooperate on fighting terrorism. The spokesman sought to deflect questions about how significant a blow Zapatero's election Sunday was to the United States. "There's a lot of different analysis out there," he said, declining to offer the president's view. "We ought not to jump to conclusions," he said. "My guess is that Spain is going to be an integral factor in Europe, in NATO, in causes that these multinational organizations adopt."
Outgoing Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar was a strong backer of the United States in the Iraq war, despite overwhelming public opposition to the invasion. Aznar's conservatives became the first government that backed Washington in Iraq to be ousted from office.
At the White House, spokesman McClellan said the topic of Spain withdrawing troops did not come up during the Monday morning conversation. |
