Description | Jo Cox, a British Labour MP, is in a critical condition after being shot and stabbed, according to reports Thursday.
An eyewitness told the BBC that the 41-year-old mother of two was left lying and bleeding on the pavement.
The incident happened in the village of Birstall, West Yorkshire, which is in Cox’s constituency. Witnesses said the attack occurred after the MP became involved in an altercation with two men near her weekly advice surgery, held at the local library.
A 52-year-old man has been arrested, West Yorkshire Police said.
An eyewitness, Clarke Rothwell, who runs a nearby cafe, told the BBC the MP had been shot and stabbed multiple times. He said: “Three times she was shot, the initial time which then she dropped to the floor and two more times. The third time he got close proximity he shot her round the head area. In the meantime he was stabbing her as well, he was stabbing her with his knife.”
Cox, a well-liked backbench MP only elected last year, has been a vocal supporter of the Remain campaign. She sent a message on Twitter Wednesday with a picture of her husband and children in a boat taking part in the protest against Nigel Farage on the Thames.
Her husband Brendan Cox is a former adviser to Gordon Brown and was head of the charity Save the Children. |
