DescriptionFormer U.S. Sen. Marlow W. Cook, a leader of the Republican renaissance in Louisville and Jefferson County during the 1960s, has died.

Cook, 89, served two terms as Jefferson County judge during the period when Republicans displaced a tottering Democratic machine, controlled City Hall and the county courthouse, and dominated local politics.

Narrowly unsuccessful in his effort to win the GOP nomination for governor in 1967, Cook was elected the next year to the U.S. Senate. He served one term before losing to then-Gov. Wendell H. Ford, a Democrat, in 1974.
