Description | West Australian Labor MP Melissa Parke will retire at the next federal election.
Ms Parke, a former United Nations lawyer who has represented the safe Labor seat of Fremantle for almost nine years, has been a staunch advocate for human rights and the environment.
"I believe that renewal is a good tonic for our democracy," she said in a statement on Friday.
The former minister for international development said after working overseas for eight years for the UN and spending almost nine years in Parliament it was time to be closer to her family and travel less.
"I look forward to new challenges in future - but will always remain engaged in the causes I care most about," she said.
Labor leader Bill Shorten thanked her for years of dedicated service, saying she has been "an unstinting champion for human rights, international development and social justice". |
