Description | Spain's governing Popular Party is close to winning an absolute majority in the country's lower legislative house in the general election to be held March 14, Abc reported, citing a survey by TNS-Demoscopia.
The PP will win 42.2 percent of the vote, or between 174 seats and 177 seats in the 350-seat congress, according to the national poll of 12,760 voting-age Spaniards. The poll has a margin of error of 1.1 percent, the newspaper said.
The opposition Socialists will win 37.2 percent of the vote, or between 133 and 137 seats, according to Abc. In 2000 the PP won 44.5 percent of the vote and 183 seats, compared with the Socialists' 34.2 percent and 125 seats.
The PP is led by Mariano Rajoy, who was picked by retiring Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar to face the Socialists' Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero. |
