Description | The morning after the next federal election, the Bloc Québécois could find itself facing the most challenging and profound question it has faced since its creation by Lucien Bouchard.
What if the election ends up as the ultimate freak accident for federalists and sovereignists alike: a Conservative or Liberal minority government with the Bloc holding the balance of power? What if Gilles Duceppe wakes up holding the key that would open the door to 24 Sussex Dr. for either Paul Martin or whoever becomes leader of the new Conservative Party on March 20?
What would the Bloc do? Would it forgo any alliance, or would it enter one to allow either the Liberals or the Conservatives to form a more stable government? In effect, given the Clarity Act, which is a Liberal law that pretends to thwart Quebecers' right to self-determination, the only possible contender for such a coalition with the Bloc is the new Conservative Party. |
