Description | State election officials on Tuesday officially declared write-in candidate Mike Duggan the winner of Detroit’s mayoral primary by more than 20,000 votes after weeks of disagreement over who won the race.
The certification of the Aug. 6 Detroit primary culminated a week-long, state-supervised review of thousands of write-in ballots. The review was required after local election officials could not agree on who won the race, Duggan or Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon.
The Wayne County elections division two weeks ago suggested invalidating thousands of write-in votes that Detroit poll workers did not properly tally on their work sheets on election night. Disqualifying the votes would have meant Napoleon beat Duggan. |
