Description | The battle to succeed Nicolas Sarkozy as leader of France’s mainstream conservative opposition party descended into chaos on Sunday night as both candidates claimed victory amid mutual accusations of ballot-stuffing.
Jean-François Copé, secretary-general of the UMP, declared to his cheering supporters that he had won a majority of the vote among party members following hours in which results from the day’s election showed the two candidates running neck-and-neck.
