Description | Rep. Laura Richardson has burned through the taxpayer dollars allotted for her official duties, according to Democratic sources and an internal email obtained by POLITICO.
As a result, the California Democrat’s aides are afraid that some of them will be laid off after the November election — win or lose — before the current Congress wraps up in January.
This is hardly the first sign that Richardson has trouble managing money. She was reprimanded by the House earlier this year for using official resources, including staff, for political purposes. Her campaign fundraising has since dried up — she gathered just $7,000 in the three months ending Sept. 30 — and her personal finances are a mess, according to federal disclosure forms.
The revelation could hardly come at a worse time for Richardson, who faces fellow Democratic Rep. Janice Hahn in next Tuesday’s election.
In an email to staff on Oct 19, Richardson’s chief of staff, Shirley Cooks, asked aides to plan no-cost “Congress on Your Corner” events for after the election. |
