Descriptionony Clement, the former Ontario health minister now in a race to head the Conservative Party of Canada, boasted Wednesday of growing support for his leadership run while naming ex-Tory cabinet minister John Crosbie as co-chair of his campaign.

Crosbie headed a long list of endorsements that Clement reeled off, including 10 Conservatives in the Ontario legislature, several former federal cabinet ministers and several members of Alberta's Tory cabinet.

"The list . . . I have given you is just the opening salvo of the kind of support we're garnering from coast to coast to coast," Clement said at a news conference at a downtown hotel.

"Perhaps it's been overshadowed in a week that has had a few other things on the table; I can't compete with the Oscars every day."

Crosbie, a driving force under Tory prime ministers Brian Mulroney and Joe Clark, joins Tom Long, a prominent Ontario organizer who once ran for the leadership of the Canadian Alliance, in Clement's bid to head the newly formed Conservative Party.
