Description | State Sen. Linda Berglin, the longest-serving woman senator in Minnesota history, announced Monday she will retire from her office next month after 39 years in the Legislature.
Berglin, a Minneapolis Democrat and leading health care expert, will leave office Aug. 15 to work full time on her new job as a health-care policy manager with Hennepin County. Gov. Mark Dayton will call a special election to fill her seat.
"During the last six months, I have felt that my talents and skills have been underutilized in the Minnesota Senate,'' Berglin said, referring to her first term as a member of the minority party. Republicans took control of the Senate last year.
"That had some bearing on my decision," she said at a Capitol news conference.
Berglin, 66, was elected to the Minnesota House in 1972 and served there for four terms before being elected in 1980 to the Senate, where she has served 10 terms. |
