Description | Denver city Councilman Michael Hancock has defeated former state Sen. Chris Romer and will be elected Denver's 45th mayor, The Denver Post projects.
The two term city councilman leads Romer by 56.6 percent to 43.4 percent.
The contest concludes a high-dollar run-off contest soured by negative campaigning that pitted Hancock, the would-be second African American to win the office, against former state Romer, the son of a popular former Governor.
Serving as Denver's mayor has been a lifelong dream for Hancock, who overcame a childhood challenged by poverty after his mother divorced his hard-drinking father when Hancock was only six.
But Hancock said his political future was unclear as he rounded out his second term.
"I was not going to run for a third term on city council," Hancock said. "I had determined that I had accomplished what I had come to accomplish for my district. Eight years I thought was long enough, and that was time for new energy and creativity."
Then, Ritter announced he wasn't seeking a second term, Hickenlooper got in governor's race and all of a sudden there was an open mayor's race in 2011. Hickenlooper had planned to seek a third term as mayor.
Tuesday night's early results represent the tally of those ballots cast from May 23 through the end of the day Monday. |
