Description | Tomeka Hart, a Memphis City Schools board member who has helped lead the charge to force consolidation of MCS with Shelby County Schools, said today she is planning to run for Congress.
Hart said in a message: "The worst-kept secret in Memphis is that I'm planning to run for Congress."
Hart, president and CEO of the Memphis Urban League, lives in Memphis in what is currently the 9th Congressional District, a seat held by U.S. Rep. Steve Cohen, who lives in Midtown.
The next election for the seat would be in 2012, with the primaries set for August and the general election in November. Hart is a Democrat and would figure to challenge Cohen in the Democratic primary. |
