Description | Jim Pederson has decided against running for the U.S. Senate in 2012.
Pederson, a former Arizona Democratic Party chairman and independently wealthy retail developer, gave Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., a tough re-election fight in 2006. He largely self-financed his unsuccessful bid. With veteran incumbent Kyl out of the 2012 race, many Democrats considered Pederson a top prospect to seek the seat.
Since his 2006 Senate run, Pederson also had been considered a potential candidate for governor and Phoenix mayor, but declined to pursue either job.
"I don't want to play a cat-and-mouse game with this U.S. Senate race -- I'm not going to be running," Pederson told AZ/DC on Wednesday. "Like I've said many times before, I've got other challenges that I am looking forward to over the next year or two. Running for the U.S. Senate is not going to be part of my life, at least for the next couple of years." |
