Description"Within hours of Indiana Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh’s retirement announcement last week, establishment Democrats in Indiana and Washington were signaling that Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) was their preferred favorite to succeed him. And by Friday, the last day to file for office, Ellsworth had announced his intention to run for the Senate seat.

It had all the makings of a neatly wrapped package, with just one exception: Rep. Baron Hill (D-Ind.) hadn’t signed off on the succession plan.

Now Hill is suggesting he’s seriously weighing a campaign — and other candidates are making calls to committee members to feel out support — and the process of choosing a Democratic Senate nominee could prove to be a lot messier than originally anticipated.

Hill, who was in Afghanistan when Bayh made his announcement and was overseas for much of the week, said Tuesday that since returning he has spoken with Bayh and about half the 32 members of the Indiana Democratic state committee that will make the decision about whom to nominate.

“As far as I am concerned, it’s going well,” he told a small group of reporters. “A lot of noncommittals. Some for Brad. Some for me. So it’s fluid, I think is the best way to put it.”

By law, the party committee must wait until after the state’s May 4 primary to pick a nominee, a process that likely won’t wind up until the end of that month.

Some Indiana Democrats are glad for a period of time to mull over their options."
