Description | JACK LAYTON is a somebody, once again. He might live to regret the somebody he’s become.
Layton, leader of the party that fancied itself the "real opposition," now finds himself in the role of protector of the Conservatives, defending the government from defeat in Parliament. He got bulldozed there by Michael Ignatieff and the Liberals. That must sting.
Most likely, the arrangements make the Conservatives queasy too, since Stephen Harper has spent so much time demonizing Layton and his proletarian party.
It’s fair to ask the prime minister whether he thinks Layton and the NDP are socialist nay-sayers trying to obstruct his good works or a suddenly sensible bunch with some reasonable ideas.
When you think about it, the new Conservative-NDP coalition, with a little help from the Bloc Quebecois, actually makes a certain sense. It’s a coalition of the self-righteous, mixing Tory faux morality and the NDP’s posed indignation. |
