Former Illinois Treasurer James Donnewald dies at 84

BREESE - Former Illinois Treasurer James H. Donnewald died Friday at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis. He was 84.
Donnewald is survived by two sons, a daughter and five grandchildren.
He was born in 1925 in Carlyle. After graduating from Lincoln College of Law in 1949, Donnewald was admitted to the bar in 1951. He began a 58-year law practice in Breese that year.
His political career began in 1948 while a law student when he was elected a Democratic precinct committeeman. Then came several posts including two terms in the Illinois House of Representatives and several in the Illinois Senate. He served as assistant Senate majority leader. |
