Description | "TRENTON - The talk about Tom Kean Jr.'s aspirations in public life began to circulate even before he arrived in the state's capital.
But despite his political pedigree as the son of one of New Jersey's most popular governors, the Union County Republican's resume from his two years in the Assembly was thin.
Then the Democrats gave him what he needed most: an issue. Now Kean is getting more attention for what he has not been able to accomplish than for what he has.
"Tom Kean Jr. experienced a dramatic increase in visibility and free media because his 'Pay to Play' legislation hit a roadblock," said David Rebovich, a political scientist at Rider University in Lawrenceville. "As long as the administration and key Democrats don't want to see it posted [scheduled for debate], Kean will have this issue."
In a state pockmarked by corruption, Kean's effort to outlaw the system in which political donations are made in hopes of securing public contracts has made him the Republican poster child for good government."
