DescriptionCongressman Alan Grayson is calling for more federal spending to prop up the faltering economy. The Orlando Democrat says without it the recession will become a depression.

Grayson, who was in Orlando Monday for a meeting of his economic advisory panel, says Republicans who criticize the stimulus package are just flat-out wrong.

"Well, they don't know anything about Orlando. That much is clear," said Grayson. "We were facing massive school closures that only stopped because we got the federal stimulus money. Except for that we'd find teachers out on the street. Wd'd find students out on the street."

The first-term Congressman also says stimulus dollars prevented Orlando from having to layoff police officers. And he says it's probably going to take more federal spending to keep the economy afloat.

"For now, yes," said Grayson. "I'm concerned about the debt as it grows, but right now there's no alternative."

Grayson stresses that he's trying to bring as much federal money to Orlando as possible noting that he's pushing more than $13 million in earmarks for the city.
