Description | House Republicans' top priority for the next 45 days is to permanently repeal a state property tax worth roughly $250 million to state coffers.
The education equalization tax has been on a three-year suspension but is slated to come back on state books in fiscal 2010. Former Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed a similar effort to make permanent the tax suspension last year, saying the state couldn't turn away revenue while facing a significant budget shortfall.
But now a Republican is in the Governor's Office - Jan Brewer - and GOP House leaders say the faltering state economy makes this the perfect time to act. "We're trying to create jobs," said state Rep. Andy Tobin, R-Paulden. "This (tax) will help kill jobs."
Equal to about 38 cents per $100 of assessed valuation, the property tax works out to about $95 annually for the owner of a home valued at $250,000. For a $1 million business property, it equates to a little under $1,000 a year.
Elimination of the property tax headed a list of House Republican priorities Monday as the caucus released its legislative agenda.
