Description | PHOENIX - State officials are recommending the closure of eight state parks because of midyear spending cuts imposed under legislation signed by Gov. Jan Brewer to eliminate a revenue shortfall.
Parks recommended for closure include Fort Verde, Homolovi, Lyman Lake, McFarland, Oracle, Riordan, Tubac and Yuma Quartermaster Depot.
Parks Director Ken Travous on Monday told The Associated Press that he will recommend those closures to the Parks Board when it holds a special meeting Tuesday morning in response to the budget cuts.
Travous says he picked the parks recommended by closure because of their higher per-visitor costs.
Parks officials caution that more closures may be needed. The parks system has a total of 27 parks. |
