DescriptionDissent erupted yesterday within the Parti Québécois as a former senior cabinet minister called on Leader Bernard Landry to step down and allow a leadership convention, a view that many PQ members have muttered privately.

In a letter sent over the Internet, Paul Bégin condemns Mr. Landry as a weak leader, unable to define a clear vision for Quebec and unwilling to promote sovereignty. The former justice minister, who quit the cabinet a year ago before the party lost last April's election, says Mr. Landry wasted two years in office by refusing to adopt a strategy to achieve sovereignty.
