Description | Former congressman Louis Stokes and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson are leading a charge to influence the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party before it picks a replacement for the late Stephanie Tubbs Jones on the Nov. 4 ballot.
Stokes and Jackson plan to headline a committee of civic and religious leaders that will pick a favorite from the candidates vying to replace Tubbs Jones, rather than leaving the decision solely to district party officials.
After interviewing the hopefuls, the committee will make a recommendation to members of the Cuyahoga County Democratic Party executive committee who live in the 11th Congressional District. Those are the members slated to vote next Thursday on who takes Tubbs Jones' place. Tubbs Jones died on Aug. 20.
Stokes, who represented the district for 30 years, said on Wednesday there always has been a screening process for Congressional candidates in the district. He said he believes the community wants the process to continue. |
