Description | Earl Butz, a former Secretary of Agriculture and dean of Purdue's College of Agriculture, died overnight in his sleep. He was 98.
Butz earned a bachelors of science degree in agriculture from Purdue in 1932. He earned the first doctoral degree in agricultural economics awarded at Purdue in 1937.
Butz joined Purdue's Department of Agricultural Economics in 1937. He served as head of the department from 1946 to 1954. Butz was made Dean of Purdue Agriculture in 1957, serving until 1967. He was dean of continuing education and vice president of the Purdue Research Foundation from 1968 to 1971.
