Description | Top Democrats on Capitol Hill sent President Bush a letter Friday to request a 60-day moratorium on the demolition of the city’s public housing developments.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) argue the greater New Orleans area “is in dire need of the kind of affordable housing that will allow citizens to return and grow the workforce” and that more time would is needed to find solutions for problems surrounding the proposed demolition; namely, the replacement of any demolished public housing structures.
The letter also pointed to an increase in New Orleans’ homeless population as reason for keeping the public housing complexes open. |
