Description | Ending speculation about her intentions, state Sen. Vivian Davis Figures, D-Mobile, confirmed Wednesday that she will challenge U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Mobile, in next year's election.
In an interview, Figures said she will formally announce her candidacy at 3 p.m. Saturday in the Mobile Government Plaza auditorium, where she once served as a member of the Mobile City Council.
"I'm going back to my roots," she said.
Figures declined to discuss the reasons behind her decision or what issues she sees as important in the race, saying she wants to leave those and other questions to Saturday's announcement.
Sessions, 60, is seeking a third six-year term. A campaign spokesman declined to comment Wednesday.
Figures, 50, has served in the state Senate since 1997, when she succeeded her husband, the late Senate President Pro Tem Michael Figures, D-Mobile, in a special election following his death from a brain aneurysm. Before then, she had been on the City Council since 1993.
Her decision to challenge Sessions came after several other Democrats, including U.S. Rep. Artur Davis of Birmingham and state Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks, took a pass.
