N.H. Senate race could be 2002 rematch

| Description | Jeanne Shaheen's campaign for the U.S. Senate is building buzz, attracting staffers and showing tremendous advantages in the polls, 16 months before the general election.
And that's before Shaheen has even decided whether to run.
The former governor is the Democrats' dream candidate to unseat Republican Sen. John Sununu, despite losing to him in 2002. Mainly because of the war in Iraq, the political landscape has changed dramatically.
National Democrats have made Sununu a top target for 2008, already airing commercials criticizing his position on the war. His Manchester office routinely draws protesters to the sidewalk, demonstrators to his lobby and petitions to his doorstep.
Matt Miller of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said only one incumbent in 2006 was as far behind in the polls at this point — Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who suffered the worst defeat among the six GOP senators ousted last year.
In a Research 2000 poll last month, Shaheen led Sununu by 22 percentage points. When matched up against any of the three lesser-known Democrats already in the race — Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand, former congressional candidate Katrina Swett and former astronaut Jay Buckey — Sununu led, but with only 46 percent support.
