DescriptionCHARLESTON -- After a sound beating in the 2006 election cycle, West Virginia Republicans know they need to come back fighting in 2008.

The Grand Old Party lost legislative seats, and its only statewide office holder is not seeking re-election.

And with President Bush's approval rating circling the drain, Republicans across the country know they have an uphill battle going into 2008.

"Republicans nationally and in West Virginia have gotten the message that it's time to repair our base," said Dr. Douglas McKinney, chairman of the West Virginia Republican Party. "We've got to get back to basics."

Democrats, on the other hand, are not without problems. Congress' approval rating isn't stellar either, but in West Virginia, at least, Democrats are enjoying a more comfortable dominance than they have had in several years. The Mountain State may have voted red in the previous two presidential elections, but West Virginia Democrats say 2008 is the year their state goes back to blue.

"Twenty-three percent of Democrats voted straight-ticket in West Virginia in 2006," said Nick Casey, chairman of the West Virginia Democratic Party. "With Sen. (Jay) Rockefeller, (U.S. Reps) Alan Mollohan and Nick Rahall (all D-W.Va.) at the top of the ticket, we're in good shape.
