Description | Riding positive employment numbers and economic growth, Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Roger Grimes called a provincial election Monday, despite recent poll numbers suggesting his governing Liberal party will be defeated.
The election will be held Oct. 21.
Mr. Grimes has hinted for some weeks at a fall election. He would have had to call one by February.
"The province is a new Newfoundland and Labrador with a fundamentally changed economy," Mr. Grimes said at a press conference in St. John's, to chants of "Roger! Roger!"
He said under the Liberal government, the province's sagging economy has turned around.
"Record numbers of people are working in our province as we stand here today," Mr. Grimes said.
"For the first time in 21 years, we have in-migration in Newfoundland and Labrador," he added.
