Description | "PERTH AMBOY -- In the 19th Legislative District, the usual political script has been turned on its head: The challenger holds strong political ties and insider status, while the incumbent faces an uphill battle.
Perth Amboy Mayor Joseph Vas, 48, who also is a part-time project manager at the Middlesex County Improvement Authority, is making a run for a 19th District Assembly seat -- an effort that could land him his third public position.
Vas defeated incumbent Arline M. Friscia for the Democratic Party nomination. With the party's backing, he defeated Friscia in the hotly contested June 3 primary. After the primary, she switched parties and is seeking election as a Republican.
If elected, Vas pledged to give up the Improvement Authority job. He will make time for both his mayor's post and the Assembly seat, he said."
