DescriptionSUNDRE, Alta. – A long-serving Conservative member of Parliament from central Alberta says he won't be running in the next federal election.

Myron Thompson says at 72, he's finding it hard to keep up with the rigours of being an MP.

Thompson also says he needs ankle-replacement surgery, and that it's been difficult for him to get around lately because of arthritis and rheumatism.

He says he doesn't expect an election for quite some time, but wants to give his constituency association plenty of notice.

"I'm the oldest member of caucus and the second-oldest in the house and I'm getting up to that age when it's difficult to keep the pace that's required to do a good job," Thompson said late Monday evening.

"I'm running out of gas so it's time for someone to take my place."
