DescriptionQUEBEC (CP) - If Quebecers had wanted a quick referendum on separation, the Parti Quebecois would have won the provincial election, says PQ Leader Andre Boisclair.

Boisclair said the PQ will have to take another look at a statute in its program stipulating that it should hold a referendum immediately after taking power, Boisclair said Friday. "We got a very clear message," Boisclair told a news conference after a caucus meeting to take stock of the PQ's poor showing in Monday's provincial election.

"If the people had wanted a rapid referendum on sovereignty we would be in power right now. It's clear that this message wasn't agreed to by the population and we need to make some changes. That's clear in my mind, very clear."

The incumbent Liberals won 48 of the 125 seats in the Quebec national assembly, the Action democratique du Quebec 41 and the PQ 36.

The PQ lost the status of official Opposition and saw its lowest level of popular support since the 1970s.
