You are now free to move about the country – with your Texas Aggies license plate bracket.
The Texas House passed a bill Tuesday morning that would protect drivers with license plate holders. The holders had become lawbreakers under a law regarding obscured license plates.
The Senate already passed the bill, which is a swift response to a Texas Court of Criminal Appeals ruling last month that declared it a Class C misdemeanor to cover any portion of a vehicle license plate.
The clarification says it is OK to bracket a license plate with a frame as long as the number and most of the state name is not obscured or altered.
In its ruling, the appeals court had said a 2003 statute passed by the Legislature specifically prohibited the covering of any part of the license plate. However, the court added that it was an "uncommonly bad" law because it was written so broadly and made scofflaws of countless motorists in Texas. |
