Description | Ellen Tauscher, a California Democrat, breezed to her sixth term with a margin of victory of nearly 30 points. But her fundraiser is already anxious about a 2008 challenge, not from a Republican, but from a fellow Democrat.
With Joe Lieberman (Conn.) newly reelected to a six-year Senate term as an Independent, Tauscher may be the No. 1 Democratic target among liberal grassroots activists looking to punish party members who supported the Iraq war.
The threat is not lost on Courtney Sigmon, Tauscher’s fundraiser. In an e-mail inviting Democratic lobbyists to a breakfast with Tauscher yesterday, Sigmon included articles that indicate that the congresswoman is likely to be a target of the left in 2008.
“You will read that Ellen is under scrutiny by various liberal groups, and one blogger even suggests that Ellen will face a similar challenge like Joe Lieberman did in 2006,” Sigmon notes.
“These groups promise to provide a Democratic challenger for Ellen’s primary in 2008. We want to take immediate action in responding to these groups.”
