DescriptionRogelio “Roger” Herrera, a 39-year-old gay Latino lawyer, has announced his candidacy for mayor of Dallas.

Herrera announced his intention to run on July 5, two days before incumbent Mayor Laura Miller told a news conference that she will not seek re-election. Miller’s announcement opened the door for a wide range of potential candidates, including gay Council member Ed Oakley and former Council member Veletta Forsythe Lill.

Both had said previously they would not seek the mayor’s job in 2007.

Herrera said this week that diversity and inclusion would be hallmarks of his campaign, and as mayor he would work to lessen the city’s racial, ethnic and economic divides.
