Dennis Hastert, a Kendall County school teacher turned House speaker, has landed in the trough of a media feeding frenzy after the resignation Friday of Rep. Mark Foley, R-Fla., over revelations that he made sexually explicit comments to a teenage Congressional page over the Internet.
Hastert issued a number of statements over the weekend, including a request that the matter be investigated by the U.S. Justice Department and the state of Florida. He set up a 1-800 hotline for parents and teens to report any misconduct.
On Monday, he held a press conference and later answered questions from the press to review the time line of what he knew about the scandal and when.
As part of his defense, he noted that a Florida newspaper had the same information as House Republicans about an "over friendly" e-mail in November 2005, but did nothing. |
