Description | Richard Pope is a Bellevue attorney who has unsuccessfully run for elected office nine times, was cited by the King County Bar Association for unprofessional conduct and has no judicial experience. And yet he's leading a sitting judge and a substitute judge in a race for King County District Court.
Why?
Pope said his numerous runs for office helped boost his name recognition in a race that's flown largely below the radar. And he said a lot of people logged on to his Web site in the days before the election and liked what they saw.
"I'm feeling wonderful," Pope said. "The trend's definitely in my direction."
The election certainly isn't over. With all the poll votes and about a third of the estimated absentees in King County counted, Pope has 35.9 percent of the vote, followed by the incumbent, District Judge Mary Ann Ottinger, with 33.5 percent and the other challenger, District Judge Pro Tem Frank LaSalata, with 30.5 percent.
The top two vote-getters will face each other in the Nov. 7 election. Based on the returns so far, Pope said he's confident he'll be in the top two, if not first place. |
