Description | Philadelphia Inquirer article.
An excerpt...
"A Chester County man was charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly using expletives and calling people "maggot" and "slimeball" while he was helping U.S. Senate candidate Carl Romanelli defend his nominating petitions.
John A. Murphy, an independent candidate for Congress, was issued the nontraffic citation from Capitol Police after the incident Tuesday morning inside a state government office building in Harrisburg.
Murphy, 60, said yesterday that he did use a barnyard epithet, slap his hand on a table and call another man "a fool," but said he was provoked by a "situation up there [that] I would say borders on fascistic."
" 'Slimeball' is not the sort of language I use," Murphy said. " 'Maggot,' maybe I might have said that."
Supporters of Green Party candidate Romanelli and those who favor Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Bob Casey Jr. are reviewing thousands of nominating signatures that Romanelli has submitted to qualify for the November ballot.
State Democrats have challenged Romanelli's petitions, saying they include numerous fake names, unregistered voters and illegible signatures. A scuffle broke out at a signature review last month.
Murphy of Coatesville is running against Republican U.S. Rep. Joseph Pitts and Democratic nominee Lois Herr in the 16th Congressional District, which includes southern Chester, part of Berks County and all of Lancaster County. He said he would consult with a First Amendment lawyer about how to respond to the citation." |
