Description | Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton and Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton publicly declared their support this morning for state Sen. Steve Cohen in the race for the Ninth Congressional District.
Cohen is a white Democrat seeking to represent a largely black district, a controversial candidacy that both mayors said should instead be a clear and easy choice for all voters.
Herenton said Cohen is the best qualified candidate and that he was "appalled" that a group of black ministers he met with on Tuesday expressed views on the candidates that were "racial in nature."
"No one can convince me that Jake Ford has a modicum of qualification for this position. All he brings to the table is the Ford name. What Steve Cohen brings to this position is a wealth of experience and knowledge of the governmental process."
Wharton said the mayors’ endorsement of Cohen represented a choice of principle over prejudice. |
