Description | Roger J. Lane won't say what his political future holds, but his tenure as New Milford's mayor and his unsuccessful bid to run for Congress has left a legacy of praise from supporters and sharp criticism from adversaries.
"Like in anything else there has to be a leader," Lane said, talking about his relationship with the Republican-controlled Borough Council. "But I take it very seriously. I run it like a business. "
Lane, beside chairing meetings of the Borough Council, has taken on the role of a negotiater and planner since being elected mayor in 1986. He recently negotiated a contract with the borough's new administrator, and in the past he argued to raise the municipality's financial rating. As a member of the council, he settled a contract with the borough Police Department.
However, Lane's take-charge style has drawn criticism.
"Roger is a nice guy as long as he's getting his way," said Teresa King, a Democrat who began a three-year term on the Borough Council Jan. 1. "That's OK, but my kids are the same way," King said, pointing to Lane's decision to skip her induction ceremony to the council after King and running mate Frank DeBari said they wanted Rep. Robert G. Torricelli, D-Englewood, to lead the ceremony.
Lane said he objected to the Democrats break with tradition, saying the municipal judge is usually the one who inducts council members.
Tradition aside, Lane also has his eye on higher political office and does not hide his ambition.
He believes his race against Torricelli helped him politically, especially in gaining name recognition, although he lost by almost 72,000 votes and failed to carry his home town.
The race also established him as a prominent Bergen County Republican. Last Thursday, county GOP leaders nominated him to serve as a commissioner of the Bergen County Utilities Authority.
Bergen County Republican Chairman John Inganamort praised Lane's campaign to unseat Torricelli. "Most people didn't expect him |
